“We can truly care for a needy world with the things we throw away.” That simple statement sums up the vision of Pastor Wendell Mettey, who founded Matthew 25: Ministries after traveling to Nicaragua as the chaplain for a medical team in the late eighties.

He saw children suffering from burns wrapped in rags in a hospital with no beds. He heard the cries of the hungry and was moved with compassion.

Reverend Mettey began traveling to Nicaragua, carrying suitcases filled with any kind of aid he could find.

Huge cargo jets based at Wright Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio helped jump-start the ministry. Nearly three dozen planeloads of goods were flown into Nicaragua, many of them around the time Hurricane Mitch ravaged the northern region of that country,

Today, Matthew 25: Ministries has established The Center For Humanitarian Relief, a huge processing and distribution center in Blue Ash, Ohio. Volunteers sort tons of donated goods which are repackaged and shipped to the poorest of the poor in Greater Cincinnati, Appalachia, American Indian reservations and more than 30 countries around the world.

Humanitarian relief shipments have recently benefitted those who suffered devastating losses to the worst hurricane season in years in the Caribbean and the Tsunami that destroyed entire regions of South Asia. The dramatic stories have slipped from the headlines, but Matthew 25: Ministries remains committed to the long-term relief necessary to rebuild lives and communities shattered by these disasters.
