Suffering With Grace
Rev. Jim Willig loved to preach. The Pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Reading, Ohio was an animated, dynamic speaker. But his most powerful sermon is likely to be his own painful journey through suffering with terminal cancer.

“This cross of cancer has brought me closer to the crucified Christ than anything I’ve ever experienced in my life,” Father Jim shared in an interview with GNN just months before the cancer claimed his life at age 50.

“There are times when I am scared to death. I know I’m dying, and I don’t want to die. But at times like that, I reach out and hold on to the crucifix.”

“Jim’s cancer has brought our whole family together in prayer,” says Ed Willig, Father Jim’s dad. “We’ve always been a religious family, gathering daily to pray, but since Jim was diagnosed with cancer, we have prayed more, and more sincerely, and not just the adults, but the children and their friends. They’re all praying for Jim. It’s amazing.”

Even as the cancer and its treatment robbed him of his strength and vitality, Father Jim continued celebrating Mass, preaching, and ministering to all who came to him.

He co-authored several books with writer Tammy Bundy, one sharing his “Lessons from the School of Suffering”.

Father Jim was surrounded by his large family and loving close friends when he entered eternal life June 24, 2001.
