In chapter 24 of Luke’s gospel, the risen Jesus joins two pilgrims on the road from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. They are discussing all that has happened to Jesus in the previous days but they fail to recognize Him. It is only later, as Jesus broke bread with them, that their eyes were opened to His presence.
The Walk to Emmaus can be just such an experience for today’s Christians. Like many Emmaus communities across the country and around the world, the Greater Cincinnati Walk to Emmaus offers a 72 hour spiritual experience for Christians who truly seek to become disciples of Christ, leaders for the church. Jesus is presented over and over again through a series of talks, prayer, worship, communion and fellowship.
“Emmaus is God’s love with skin on it,” says Pastor Bruce Crane, spiritual director for a recent men’s walk.
“Jesus came and walked with me at a time when I wasn’t looking for any help,” reflects pilgrim Art Harmon. “He showed up in a big way. It was a life-changing experience.”
Pilgrims who complete the 3-day weekend are encouraged to move on to their “4th day” serving in their own church community with new vitality and direction. They meet regularly in small groups and monthly at larger gatherings. Some also become involved in the Emmaus community, helping to coordinate and present the weekend experience to others. “The whole thing is an act of volunteer giving,” observes Darlene Branham who actively participates in the community. “No one is paid and everyone is happy and excited to do it.”
Team member Annise Anderson says, “It brings people together from all backgrounds and you share one thing in common, the love of God.”
